HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 21

Requesting the West Virginia Department of Transportation, in
cooperation with other government agencies, to develop the
potential for the construction of at least one tourist
attraction on the West Virginia Turnpike that draws
attention to the meaning and significance of the exposed
rock and coal strata in the mountainside land cuts that
exist along the turnpike.
Whereas, Tourism has developed into the second largest
industry in West Virginia; and
Whereas, West Virginia has many important, meaningful,
historical, scenic and interesting tourist attractions which help
support a growing tourist economy; and
Whereas, Other potential attractions need to be developed to
further efforts to increase tourism within the state; and
Whereas, Greater efforts need to be made to inform travelers
of the tourist attractions in West Virginia; and
Whereas, More than ten million people travel the West
Virginia Turnpike each year and should be informed of state
attractions, including points of interest along the turnpike; and
Whereas, Printed material about these attractions could be
made available at nearby information centers and rest stops; and
Whereas, Such points of interest include the mountainsideland cuts that exist along the turnpike; and
Whereas, Each strata in one of these mountainside land cuts
gives a unique and interesting story on the geological formation
of the region; and
Whereas, Such a project would have informative, educational,
interesting and scenic value; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature requests the West Virginia Department
of Transportation, in cooperation with other government agencies,
to develop the potential for the construction of at least one
tourist attraction on the West Virginia Turnpike that draws
attention to the meaning and significance of the exposed rock and
coal strata in the mountainside land cuts along the turnpike;

That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the
Department of Transportation and the Governor.
